Talk Description: This talk will attempt to address the question: How can we help new teachers bridge the gap between Technology, Pedagogy, and Content Knowledge to use technology to EXPAND and ENHANCE the ways they teach music?

Andrea presented a session on "Student Centered Rehearsal Practices' at the New York NAfME Collegiate conference on February 15, 2018 at the Aaron Copland School of Music, Queens College

Session description:

How can we as music educators lead effective rehearsals, avoiding solely teacher directed, rote instruction (Ormrod, 2004) yet, offer our students opportunities to construct deeper meanings through engaging rehearsal practices (Block, 2001)? In this session,  Dr. Maas will present a hands-on, music-making session for pre-service teachers of all concentrations where participants will explore student-driven rehearsal practices that result in high levels of literacy, engagement, motivation, expression and independent musicianship. We will also discuss how this approach is a simple and authentic way to ensure you are effectively addressing the standards. This session will use choral music as a vehicle for demonstration and collaboration but the approaches can be applied to all rehearsal settings.

ATLANTA- MARCH 22-24

Music Teacher Education and Music Technology- Bridging the Gap BetweenTraditional and Emerging Pedagogies.

The constant emergence of new music technologies, supported by creative initiatives set forth by state and federal standards (NAfME, 2014; NCCAS, 2014) begs us as music educators to question whether or not we are serving the needs and interests of our students. How do we keep up with each new tool that is available in order to effectively equip teachers with the skills required to employ them in the classroom? Moreover, music teacher educators must consider the ways we address the relevant pedagogies and curricular implications that result for pre-service teachers. It seems that regardless of how confident teachers are in their ability to use a piece of music education software, they lack the skills needed to implement these tools into their course material with their students (Scher, 2014).

To better assist new teachers, we might ask, How do these tools influence and affect what we teach and how we teach it? How do we find room in an already overwhelming program of study for both the old, the new, and the ever-changing? How might we use music technology to bridge the gap between traditional and emerging pedagogies?

Technology may be used a means to a music end and not the end itself. Frankel (2010) states that “Music technology, when used effectively, can have a tremendous impact on the way students learn about music” (in Abeles & Custodero, 2010, p.256), implying that technology may only find authentication when in the context of our musical engagements with students (Savage, 2015).

This presentation explores the perceived and realized potential of music technology with three pre-service and three in-service music teachers. The pre-service teachers describe their perceptions of implementing music technology and imagine new possibilities for using these tools. Three in-service music teachers describe the ways in which they currently apply music technology in their K-12 classrooms and their perceived outcomes of this work with their students. From these experiences we can begin to understand how music technologies might be incorporated into music teacher education in order to empower teachers to expand,- not replace -what takes place in existing music classrooms. Allsup (2015) describes a “both/and” moment in music education when change confronts and challenges tradition, creating tensions in what and how we teach music. He suggests that the expansion of the ways we make and learn music requires us to build on our current pedagogical approaches and our disposition toward knowledge versus the ways we teach may need to evolve. It seems that the roles of creativity and technology in the course of pedagogic change may still require exploration (Burnard, 2007). This presentation will discuss how incorporating creative, cloud-based music technology tools can engage and motivate students musically in any setting without abandoning traditional practices, values and beliefs. Additionally, it will consider the implications for music teacher education and the potential for supporting changing dispositions and pedagogical approaches to include creative technologies. A focus on potential pedagogical approaches and challenges for music teacher education is emphasized.
